Wheels Day

Last Friday the Reception boys were allowed to bring their bikes or scooters into school. They had lots of fun riding them around the playground! This activity was linked to our topic on “Vehicles and Travelling”. We talked about how the bikes and scooters moved and discussed “pushes” and “pulls”. We continued to investigate pushes and pulls in the classroom where we used cars and ramps. We look at how the height of the ramp changes the speed of the car. We also looked at what happens to the speed of the car if a textured ramp was used.

Here are some photos of the boys in RA enjoying Wheels Day!

What makes a car go?

This week the boys have gone in small groups to visit Mr Hoy in the car park. Mr Hoy told the boys all about the different parts of the car and they were even able to look under the bonnet! They compared Mr Hoy’s car to one of the school mini buses. They were allowed to sit in the drivers seat and sound the horn of the mini bus!

Maybe if you have a few minutes to spare you could show your son under the bonnet of your car. We have also looked at head lights, indicators, wheels, tyres, registration plates and the petrol cap. It would be great if you have chance to reinforce this at home.

Over the last couple of weeks the boys have been talking about long / tall / wide / narrow objects. We made up own own Mr Men characters last week (Mr Tall, Mr Short, Mr Wide and Mr Narrow)  and this week we have been ordering different objects according to their height. Here are some of the activities the boys did this morning

More Visitors!

After starting the week with an interesting talk from Mr Brar we have had a few more visitors this week…..and it’s only Wednesday!

Yesterday Perform Drama came to run sessions with Pre Prep. RA went first and were transported to the Wild West! As you can see, the boys had great fun.

Also Mrs Demetriou came to see us with a very special guest, Cally the dog! Cally is a PAT (Pets as Therapy) dog. She visits places such as Care Homes and cheers up the residents. She certainly made us smile.

Vaisakhi

Today Ravjoth’s Dad came to talk to us about Sikh New Year which is called Vaisakhi.

Mr Brar explained how Vaisakhi is celebrated at home and at the Gurdwara. He went on to tell the boys about his turban and even demonstrated how to put one on. All the boys listened very carefully and asked some excellent questions.

Room on the Broom

This week we have read Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. We talked about travelling in the air and thought about what we would like to put on our imaginary broomstick. The only problem was that things had to rhyme eg a cat in a hat, a dog on a log!

It would be great of you could continue to talk about rhyming words at home. Maybe you could read rhyming stories and poems or even make up your own rhyming sentences.

Our rhyming work is on the wall, you are very welcome to come in and have a look at the end of the day.

Topic Work

As you know, our current topic is about vehicles and travelling. Today some of the boys chose to come outside and investigate the best way to make a paper aeroplane.

They had lots of fun, especially as it was a windy day!

Please do continue to use the Purple Mash website with the activities I have listed in previous posts. Here are some more activities if you would like to try something else.

  • Home – World Book Day (lovely activities to reinforce our special day last week.)
  • Simple City – Garage (the boys have enjoyed using this at school)
  • Phases – 3-5 – Maths City 1

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at Parents Evening. Please note the appointments are in the theatre not in the classroom.

Many thanks!

World Book Day

The boys have had lots of fun on World Book Day! They all looked great dressed up as brave characters from books and comics.

We started the day by looking at a selection of comic strips and talked about how to use speech bubbles. The class then split into groups of 5 and each group wrote their own comic! The boys had to take different items out of a “story bag” and each item had to be included in the story. It was a great opportunity to use their imaginations!

The comics look great and we have put them in the Book Corner to enjoy. Maybe the boys could continue to read comics and have a go at making their own at home with you.
