Maths Challenge

Could you please visit a real shop to buy some small items such as sweets that cost less than £1 or 50p. Take a range of coins with you and practise counting in ones, twos and tens. Furthermore, if you have a toy till at home, practise using coins to buy different items. Have fun!

  1. Charlie wasn’t feeling great at the weekend so we played pretend shops. He made a till and we got some real coins to buy snacks we had at home.

We used 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p coins and bought different combinations of the snacks. Then we added up how much the snacks costed and Charlie found the right coins.

    Lots of fun!

  2. William enjoyed playing pretend toy shop. We used the money from his money box to ‘buy’ toys and he is starting to recognise £1, £2, 50p, 10p and 1p coins and was adding them together to buy the various items. He was enjoying being the shop keeper more so than the adding up but it was good fun.

  3. Christopher went into the newsagents and bought a packet of sweets for 75p. He had 1x 50p, 2x 10p, 3x 1 p and 1x 2p.
